Reservoirs are crucial to having a sufficient supply of drinking water, but they are prone to contamination by pesticides. In an EPA monitoring program of twelve water-supply reservoirs across the United States, many pesticides were detected. Two widely used herbicides, atrazine and simazine, were detected at every site and in 85% of water samples. Cities spend millions of dollars to reduce chemicals in drinking water to meet federal standards, but these actions do not alleviate long term health complications due to chronic exposure. Many studies have linked atrazine to problems with reproduction and pregnancy. Due to long-term buildup of these chemicals in the human body, federal regulations may not be enough to protect people from health risks.
